Redfish, also know as “Red Drum”. One of the very best fighting inshore species to catch. These fish have large, strong shoulders, a big redfish can have many exciting runs before deciding to come boatside. These are by far my favorite fish to target and eat in my local Clearwater area. You are aloud to harvest one redfish (18-27 inches in length) per person per day.
Redfish live the first three years of their lives in the bays and shallow waters, around oyster bars, mangroves, and grassy flats. On good days, we can often spot them tailing. This occurs when they are unaware of their tails being exposed while feeding on the bottom in shallow water. As they mature, around 30″-34″, they move off to the Gulf, where they will often reach weights of over 50 pounds. Their spawning season begins in August and ends in late October. Occasionally, these large Redfish called “Bull Reds”, can be caught in the shallows during the spawning months.
At higher tidal periods, Redfish move into the mangroves and onto oyster bars ambushing baitfish as they swim by. During low tide redfish can be spotting making large humps through the water. Casting sardines or pinfish under a popping cork can be very effective in either situation.
Redfish eat a variety of baits including greenbacks, threadfins, pinfish, mullet, ladyfish, shrimp and many artificial lures. There are certain baits for different seasons that are better to entice a nice redfish to eat. Redfish are one of the best inshore flats species to catch and if you want to experience the thrill book a inshore flats fishing charter here in Clearwater, Florida.
