The spotted sea trout is one of our best resources for catching shear numbers of fish. As a Florida Fishing Guide in the Clearwater, Florida area, I am glad to have the ablitilty to catch such a great fish all year round.
Their spawning season begins in April and runs through September. However, the earlier spawning months tend to be the best for catching larger trout. Fish are often landed in the 5-8 pound range. The average trout can be expected to weigh 2-4 pounds.
Often found in large groups around our local Clearwater area, spotted sea trout can offer one rod bend after another. They tend to live in clear water over sea grass beds or sandy potholes, but can also be found around oyster bars and in canals.
They like to eat live shrimp, greenbacks (sardines), pinfish, and many other types of live bait. A multitude of artificial lures or flies can also entice a strike from these aggressive eaters. Generally, light, spinning tackle is all we need for a fun filled day of spotted sea trout fishing.
My favorite time to target trout is in the colder months when jumbo shrimp are my bait of choice. With a good moving tide, tossing a big shrimp and drifting it in front of a school of trout is deadly.
